Eire Og Annacarty 0-16, Killenaule 1-11.
Late frees from goalie Daragh Mooney and Seanie Ryan ensured a winning start for Eire Og Annacarty in this hard-fought opener of the County Senior Hurling championship held in Dundrum.
With the backing of a stiff breeze, the South side made most of the early running clocking up 3 quick points through Michael Doyle, Kieran Bergin and a monster free from goalie Matthew O'Donnell in response to Conor O'Brien's opener. Donal O'Dwyer and Conor O'Brien had further points sandwiching another Kierna Bergin score. With Tony Doyle adding another point to leave the South side ahead 0-05 to 0-03 after 10 minutes.
After two Eire Og shots went wide, Killenaule took over for the next 10 minutes, landing 1-03 without reply. Points coming through Pat Kerwick frees (2) and Eoin Barry with the goal coming through a rasper from John "Bubbles" O'Dwyer in the 17th minute following a counter-attack. With Tom Fox moving into the full-backline, Eire Og managed to steady the ship with four unanswered points during the 10 minutes leading to half-time through frees shared by Seanie Ryan and goalie Daragh Mooney to leave the half-time score 1-08 to 0-07 in favour of Killenaule.
Whatever was said in the Eire Og dressing room at the half-time interval paid off in the opening minutes of the 2nd half when they landed the first three points through a Seanie Ryan free and a Dinny Crosse brace to leave the minimum between the sides on 36 minutes. Killenaule's Joe O'Dwyer landed 2 long-range frees either side of a point from play from Seanie Ryan to leave 2 in it mid-way in the 2nd half. Tom Stakeleum stretched the South side's lead to three with 12 minutes left, however it proved to be their final score as Eire Og stepped up a gear through the aid of a strong breeze with excellent points from Conor O'Brien and Brian Fox before Daragh Mooney levelled matters with another long-range free in the 23rd minute. The Tipperary Senior Hurling goalie soon put Eire Og in front for the first time since the opening minutes with another long-range free in the 58th minute. Killenaule couldn't response and Seanie Ryan closed out the scoring with another pointed free to leave Eire Og winners 0-16 to 1-11 at Johnny Ryan's full-time whistle.
Daragh Mooney was alert to whatever was thrown at him throughout along with landing those match-winning frees. In defence Michael Bradshaw, Diarmaid Ryan and Tom Fox impressed throughout with Paidi O'Dwyer, Steven O'Brien and Eoin Bradshaw contributing when called upon. Brian Fox and Ronan O'Brien grafted hard at midfield with Conor O'Brien, Dinny Crosse and Seanie Ryan contributing well on the scoreboard with hard-work throughout from Eoin Kennedy, Kev Fox and Donal O'Dwyer. Sub Aidan Griffin on his Championship debut looked dangerous in the closing minutes. With Toomevara and Kilruane McDonaghs to come, Eire Og will be aware that they can ill-afford to give these teams leeway else their Championship season could be abruptly halted.
