3 goals in the 2nd half proved Eire Og Annacarty's undoing as Moyle Rovers maintain their 100% record in the 2nd round of the County Senior Football Championship held in a sun-drenched New Inn last Sunday. This victory ensures Moyle Rovers progress to the quarter-finals while Eire Og Annacarty face off against fellow dual club Upperchurch-Drombane in a winner-take-all final group game next month with Killenaule propping up the table having lost both their opening games.
The first quarter was tight and tense as both team swapped scores inside the opening 10 minutes, Rovers scoring first through Richard Power and Diarmaid Foley only for Dinny Crosse to level matters both times from play and a free. Paul Devlin gave Eire Og the lead for the only time in the game with a point from play, but alas for the West side it was as good as it got as Rovers got a firm grip of proceedings around the middle third, shooting 6 unanswered points through Stephen Quirke(2), David McGrath, Luke Boland, Diarmaid Foley and Danny Owens. It could have got worse for Eire Og only for Stephen Quirke's goal to be disallowed through a foul handpass. At the half-time interval, Moyle Rovers led 0-08 to 0-03 with the assistance of whatever breeze there was.
Dinny Crosse got Eire Og up and running in the 2nd half with a brace of points inside the opening 6 minutes. In the 38th minute, Shane Foley struck for the game's opening goal finishing a counter-attack to the net after Eire Og lost pocession in midfield. Goalie Daragh Mooney pointed a long-range free in response on the 3/4 mark. The west side needed a goal to stay in touch, but the County Champions had other ideas, Diarmaid Foley struck for goal number 2 on the 48th minute. Gut-wrenching for Eire Og as Tom Fox flashed a goal bound effort wide past Ciaran Kenrick's left post beforehand. Eire Og had their best spell folowing this body-blow, landing 4 unanswered points through half-time sub Paul Downey(2, 1 free), Connie Bradshaw and Paul Devlin. The margin was now back to 4 with 5 minutes left. The County Champions weren't done yet, as further points from Aidan McGrath and Shane Foley before sub Shane Lonergan landed Rovers' 3rd goal along with a point to ensure a 10 point victory for Moyle Rovers at Johnny Butler's full-time whistle.
Best for Eire Og were Conor O'Brien, Paul Devlin, Tom Fox, Eoin Kennedy, Donal O'Dwyer and Dinny Crosse. The absence of Brian and Kev Fox through injury didn't help Eire Og's cause as they need to beat Upperchurch\Drombane to progress to the County quarter-finals.
